Yosemite Falls Black @ White Images

Thank the heavens for the rain …. When Luke and I first turned up to Yosemite National Park it looked dry, very dry. Yosemite Falls was not flowing at all and the Merced River was very low. I think this was a monday, but the following day as we set up for the morning 6am shoot it started to rain and it never stopped till after 6pm that evening. We woke the following day to a national park transformed overnight. The Merced and the many creeks where running high and loud, Yosemite Falls was a completely different place with huge amounts of water coming over the falls. The parked looked greener and photo opportunities exploded …

Below is a shot of Yosemite Falls the morning after the rains.

Usually I don’t like b/w landscape photos. But this one looks really great! You’ve got very nice contrast between light and shadows and photo looks 3D. Very, very nice photo! Well done, Neal!

  4. Cheers Thomas, even more so in real life when you get close …

Cheers Dave – Been working on my black and whites for a couple of weeks now … Tons of trial and error …

Thanks Ilya – Yeah it does have a certain 3D effect with the angle of the sun light … Glad you liked it … It is getting printed and framed after xmas for orders as a 30*20 and 24*16

Awesome detail in B&W. Imagine the power this place could generate after a full season of rain.
    Cheers Adrian

  7. Cheers Mark …. Saturday night we may get some here …

Thanks Adrian … Yosemite does not get a lot of rain because of the elevation. They do however get a fair amount of snow, so the in Spring the snow melt provides a steady supply through spring and early summer to the parks waterfalls, creeks and rivers. In saying that there is a sign in the park that marks the flood I think its 1997 and that sign must be at least 10 feet above the road level. Park would of looked like a swamp that year …
